UPDATE: Metro police kill suspect who kidnapped former girlfriend on east side of Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Las Vegas police shot and killed a man Tuesday who they say kidnapped and held his former girlfriend hostage. The shooting happened near E. Charleston Avenue and Sloan Lane, east of Nellis Boulevard.

There is a heavy police presence in the area and traffic is being diverted off Charleston.

According to police sources, the suspect was shot and killed after he took a female hostage and was using her as a shield. The police sources tell 8 News Now that the suspect pointed his gun at the female and at officers several times and then fired several rounds. An officer armed with a rifle shot the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jim Johnson, who drove near the scene, said police have an Albertson grocery store parking lot cordoned off and traffic is being diverted off of Charleston at Sloan. Johnson said all an officer would tell him was that "it's a critical situation."
