Lake Mead, Lake Mohave Offer Free Memorial Day Entry for Safe Boaters

Lake Mead, Lake Mohave Offer Free Memorial Day Entry for Safe Boaters

The National Park Service is waiving lake use fees Saturday, May 28 through Monday, May 30 on Lake Mead and Lake Mohave – a savings of $16 per vessel – for boaters who show proof of completing an approved boating course.

"Statistics show that the majority of boaters who are involved in accidents report that they haven't completed a formal boating education course," Superintendent Bill Dickinson said.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics showed that in 2009, 78 percent of boating accidents and 86 percent of boat fatalities involved operators with no formal boating education.

"We're announcing this early so boaters who haven't taken a course will have a chance to do so before the holiday weekend," Dickinson said.

Reconstruction of Spencer Street Showcases New Technology

The city of Las Vegas is reconstructing Spencer Street between St. Louis and Sahara Avenues beginning this week.

The work is being done as a demonstration project for upgraded in-place asphalt recycling technology, and is a partnering effort between the city and Angelo Benedetti, Inc. In-place pavement recycling reduces roadway costs, while reducing the amount of energy and materials needed. It also reduces area truck traffic, eliminates waste product and accelerates the project completion.

As part of its sustainability initiative, the city looks for vendors and products that help conserve energy and reduce the city's carbon footprint.

New Traffic Signal at Washington and Comstock

A new traffic signal will go into efffect at Washington Avenue and Comstock Drive at 5 p.m. today.

Following a short ceremony the new signal will be placed in full red, yellow, green operation mode. The new signal cost $223,000, and was funded through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. Southern Nevada Paving Corporation installed the signal.

The signal was placed in red flash mode, signaling an all-way stop, during the early morning hours today, so that motorists could familiarize themselves with the light. Motorists are advised to use caution in the intersection as they get used to this new traffic control feature.
