Donated Prom Gowns Prove Perfect Fit for Designers and Young Women in Need

A partnership between the school district and local vendors helps young ladies find a dress for the big night.

Dolled up in a short pink floral dress, Erica Magallon made walking a runway look easy Saturday afternoon at the Fashion Show mall when she showed off her prom dress for the first time. “It’s like I’ve been doing it forever,” said Magallon, the 18-year-old Desert Pines High School senior’s first time on the catwalk.

Health, Fitness Fair To Be Put on By Kids at Stupak Center

 

Health and fitness are on the agenda for a Saturday fair at Stupak Community Center.

The center’s Youth Council invites people to a Fun & Fitness Fair at the center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can enjoy games, healthy snacks, health screenings (blood sugar, heart rate, blood pressure,) information and activities, as well as register for the center’s workshops, activities and classes. Admission and all activities are free.

Free Activities for Winter in Venice Celebration

Kids can get into the holiday spirit without the mess in the kitchen. First Food & Bar inside the Palazzo is offering a free holiday treat class. The class is from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday. Parents need to make reservations. Kids will be able to decorate gingerbread cookies and other holiday treats.

Call the restaurant at 607-3478 to make a reservation. The activity is open to kids of all ages.

The chef from First Food & Bar will carry the holiday cheer into the afternoon. Chef Sam DeMarco will be in front of the Venetian from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, as part of the Winter in Venice activities. He will be roasting chestnuts along with serving hot chocolate and cider. The event is also free and open to all ages.

Many Children Introduced to Ballet by Seeing Peers Dance in 'The Nutcracker'

The holiday classic appears on the Strip this year.

When compared with other ballets, one of the most unique facets of "The Nutcracker" is that the major parts of Clara and Fritz are performed by children, and other children dance many of the supporting roles.

Inaugural Scarecrow Festival in Support of Communities In Schools of Nevada

Communities In Schools of Nevada (CIS) invites families for an evening of fall activities at the inaugural Scarecrow Festival on from 6-10 p.m. on October 21 at The Sports Center of Las Vegas.

CIS has gathered seasonal favorites for children of all ages to participate in as parents mix and mingle and enjoy live entertainment while benefiting the organization that is part of a national dropout prevention network. Rounding out the evening is a spread of tastings prepared by restaurants from The Cosmopolitan.

Seasonal activities include the hay bale maze, decorating pumpkins, playing festive games, completing challenges on the climbing wall and hitting in batting cages to win prizes. Costumes are encouraged, as the most creative attire will win highly coveted awards.

Girl Scouts a Hit on Strip Stage

 

Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada hosted a two-day workshop on June 17 and 18, where girls were challenged to learn about the music industry to earn their Making Music and Music Fan badges.

The girls participated in a three-hour program with musician Ryan Ahern, star of Piano! Las Vegas at his private rehearsal studio on June 17. Ahern worked with the girls to create musical instruments, rehearse for the performance, discuss the history of music and explore career possibilities.

The program culminated with 23 girls performing the song “Rainbow Connection” during Ahern’s show Piano! Las Vegas.

Madame Tussuads Las Vegas at The Venetian is offering a deal for dads. Sunday only, dads can get into the attraction for free with the purchase of a full-price adult or child admission. Mention "Dads Go Free" at the box office to enjoy the special offer.

Madame Tussuads features more than 100 figures of the famous and the infamous. The figures cost around $300,000 and are created with incredible detail. Dads can take pictures along side the wax figures of famous fathers like President Barack Obama, Will Smith and Elvis Presley.  The figures are often accurate to the last freckle.
