Teen Shot Following Hit and Run Crash | News
LAS VEGAS -- A hit-and-run crash Tuesday night ended with gunfire. Police said a man chased down the teen who rear-ended his car and shot him in the head.
The incident started around 5:15 p.m. when the teen's truck rear-ended a Jeep Cherokee near Sunset Road and McLeod Drive. Police said the teen panicked and drove off to the nearby McLeod Business Centre.
The teen driver and his teen passenger got out to look at the damage to the truck. Police said, at that point, The driver of the Cherokee showed up and blocked in the teen's truck.
Police say the 17-year-old driver panicked again, hit the gas while in reverse, and crashed into the Jeep a second time.
The driver of the Jeep told Metro he feared for his life so he fired three or four shots striking the teen driver in the head and ear.
Police evacuated nearby businesses, including Premier Building Group.
"One of our colleagues heard a couple shots, and then we heard all the sirens and the commotion," said Premier Building Group employee Jane McCaffery.
"A road rage is certainly a concern, and when I heard somebody got shot, as you mentioned, there twice in the head, that's certainly a concern for us that work here," added Premier Building Group employee Steve McCaffery.
Metro Police Detective Lisa Crane says the teen victim spent the evening in surgery at Sunrise Hospital. His condition is unknown, but police said his injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.
The man who fired the gun was transported to the Clark County Detention Center. Both the teen who left the scene of the accident and the man who chased him down could face criminal charges.
Another driver who witnessed everything at the initial accident also followed the teen's truck and saw the shooting. Police took that driver's statement, and investigators stress their investigation is ongoing.
