Biden Faults Romney for Not Releasing Tax Returns

LAS VEGAS -- Vice president Joe Biden gave this warning to the national council of La Raza at Mandalay Bay Tuesday afternoon.

"I have a bad habit of saying exactly what I believe, and I'm going to say it today," he said.

He wasted no time attacking presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. "Imagine what the Supreme Court will look like after four years of a Romney presidency," he said.

Vice President Joe Biden denounced Romney on Tuesday as a candidate with something to hide.

Biden, campaigning for President Barack Obama in the battleground of Nevada, told Hispanic leaders that Romney doesn't live up to the openness that the Republican's father represented when he ran for president 44 years ago. The vice president said Romney's father, George Romney, released 12 years of tax returns when he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in 1968.

"He wants you to show your papers, but he won't show us his," Biden said.

Biden told the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza that Romney has released only one year of his tax returns, adding: "Making a lie of the old adage: Like father, like son."

Romney has released his 2010 tax return and an estimate for 2011.

Biden told the audience the Hispanic community is the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S.

"You now make up 16 percent of the population of the United States of America," Biden said. "Your time is about to come."

According to the 2010 census, the Asian community is the fastest growing population, increasing 43 percent between 2000 and 2010.

Romney campaign spokesperson Valentina Weis fired back. "The Hispanic community has been hit disproportionately hard in the Obama economy, with an unemployment rate of 11% and millions more Hispanics living in poverty since the Obama administration took office," she said. "Yet, Vice President Biden would rather engage in cynical and dishonest character attacks than discuss how to create jobs and promote opportunity for all Americans."

After leaving Mandalay Bay, 8 News NOW traveled with Biden to the U.S. Vets Training Center north of downtown. Meeting with veterans of all ages, Biden said this generation of warriors cannot be shunned, and America must support our veterans.

"Two point eight million volunteered after nine eleven. Two point two million walked across those damn scorching sands of Iraq or those God-awful mountains in Afghanistan, and we wanted to make sure when they came home - that they didn't run into the same kind of resistance," Biden said.

The motorcade headed back to McCarran International Airport, where Air Force Two took off. Biden and his wife Jill left Las Vegas for a private fundraiser in Park City, Utah. Dr. Jill Biden was also scheduled to meet with military families.

Election Day is 117 days away. Nevada could deliver the jackpot in this election to either party, so expect more campaign stops as the election nears.
