New Airport Terminal Opens for Business

LAS VEGAS -- McCarran International Airport's brand new, state of the art Terminal 3 is now open. The grand opening marks the biggest expansion in the airport's 64 year history, and the first flight from Europe has already arrived.

The $2.4 billion facility is the gateway to Las Vegas, and so far, Terminal 3 has gotten off to a flying start. The first flight using the new terminal touched down at 1:30 p.m. A ceremony greeted the arrival of the Virgin Atlantic flight from London.

The 14-aircraft gate terminal will handle not only international flights, but domestic flights as well. Seven international carriers will use half of the gates and the others will handle U.S. airlines.

Other first day touchdowns at T3 will come from Germany, Amsterdam and Panama City. T3 has some of the airline industry's latest technologies, including self-serve check-in kiosks, streamlined security and automated baggage-handling.

McCarran says the 1.9 million square foot, three-story building will spread the flow of all the passengers who use McCarran. In fact, 114,000 travelers pass through the airport each and every day.

All the baggage conveyers are about eight miles, the electrical wiring and cable can stretch from las vegas to the beaches of Los Angeles, and the terminal has 300 slot machines.
