Public Discussion on Japan's Nuclear Power Plant Accident Tonight at the Barrick Museum

The emergency at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has been in the news constantly. For those of you who are interested in learning more about how nuclear power plants function and what when wrong in this case, UNLV is hosting a free public round table. A group of leading nuclear and radiation experts from the Harry Reid Center at UNLV will be discussing what exactly happened, if it could ever happen in the US, and implications for the future of the nuclear industry. They will also be taking questions from the audience.

The round table will be held at the UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum Auditorium. the doors will open at 6:45, and the first 150 attendees will be admitted. The round table will run from 7 pm to 8:30 pm.

Springs Preserve hosts Spring Plant Sale, Saturday, March 26

Unusual, desert adapted plants including a large selection of agaves and cacti will be among those offered for sale as the Springs Preserve hosts its annual Spring Plant Sale Saturday, March 26, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. 

The sale will feature limited quantities of about 5,000 native and drought-tolerant plant species, including seasonal perennials. Plants will be sold in container sizes ranging from 2 inches up to 5 gallons. Springs Preserve garden staff experts will be on hand to answer customers’ questions about how to care for their new plants.

New at this year’s event will be a silent auction to bid for cactus and succulent container gardens, and “table top” garden displays also will be offered for sale.

Springs Preserve members will have exclusive access to the sale from 7-8 a.m. The sale will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Convene For Green” (CFG) Summit March 10th at Springs Preserve

Green Chips and the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition are hosting the "Convene For Green" summit this Thursday at the Springs Reserve. At the summit, the groups will be launching their new sustainability road map and declaration for southern Nevada. The map represents a year of work and collaboration, and looks at social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The Summit begins at 8am and concludes with Mayor Goodman signing the declaration at 4pm.

UNLV Students Join National Effort to Boost Energy Literacy

This Tuesday, March 1st, join the students of the UNLV Sierra Student Coalition in a series of events throughout the UNLV campus.  These energy events are aimed at boosting the awareness of clean energy in the Las Vegas community. Staring at 10am, there will be a Clean Energy Resource Fair and display on the campus's North Field, followed by a Clean Energy Forum at 6pm. At the forum, held in the Science and Engineering Building Auditorium, members of the energy industry will be speaking on issues and trends in the clean energy arena, and the possible impact this could have on Nevada. These events are part of the UNLV's Focus the Nation program, which looks to provide a clean future with the help of youth leadership.
