The Clark County commission approved big changes to Sunset Park.

Crews are set to start construction by mid-summer on 75 of the 375 acres of the park at Sunset Road and Eastern Avenue. The commission awarded the $11.7 million contract to Hardy Construction on Tuesday.

Improvements include a walking loop with exercise stations that will go around the entire lake. The lake will also get new lighting, a pedestrian plaza, a remodeled dock, a new playground and improved picnic areas.

“This is one of Las Vegas’ most popular and heavily used regional parks and this particular face lift is a long time in coming,” said Commission Vice Chair Steve Sisolak, who represents the area where the park is located. “I think our residents are going to be very pleased when the work is complete.”

The project will last through 2012 but it is not expected to impact the baseball diamonds, basketball courts or the disc golf course. There will be occasional closures of entrances to the park and some parking lots as crews make improvements to paving.

The county consulted with environmentalists about the changes to make sure waterfowl that use Sunset Lake are not hurt by the construction. They are also working with a botanist to preserve as many trees in the area as possible. While the county is in a budget crunch money for this project was provided by the sale of federal lands through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act.
