Solar Power Coming to Las Vegas Sign

The iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is starting a new era.

On Monday, Clark County broke ground on a solar tree to power the sign. The legendary neon lights will soon run off southern Nevada's abundant sun.

Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani says it is an opportunity to send a message to the world.

"We want to use this as a way to show America, and Europe and Asia that we believe in green energy that we have the most sun in the world that we should be capitalizing on," Giunchigliani said.

A coalition of groups, including the Clean Energy Project, Bombard Renewable and NV Energy helped pay for the solar tree. When the project is finished, there will be three trees collecting the six to eight kilowatts need to power the sign.
