Las Vegas Resort Planning Rooftop Solar Power Array

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A casino company is marking a visit to Las Vegas by federal officials with an announcement about a rooftop solar array at a Strip hotel that will host a National Clean Energy Summit next month.

MGM Resorts International officials announced Tuesday that the planned 6.2 megawatt rooftop installation at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center could begin operating next year.

It should be able to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 1,000 homes.

MGM Resorts is partnering with a subsidiary of publicly traded NRG Energy Inc. on the project.

Cost and construction dates weren't immediately disclosed.

The announcement was made during a visit by Interior Secretary Sally Jewell with Democratic U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada in advance of the sixth annual National Clean Energy Summit on Aug. 13.
