Prom Closet Offering Free Dresses to High School Students

Today is the deadline to drop off gently used prom dresses for Sunday's Las Vegas Prom Closet pick-up event.

The Prom Closet provides free prom dresses for girls who would not otherwise have the money to buy one. Sunday's event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at HELP of Southern Nevada, 1600 E. Flamingo, Suite 100. A school ID is required to receive a dress.

Dresses may be dropped off through today at the following locations:

  • Jessica McClintock - (702) 733-4003 - Inside Fashion Show Mall (dress donors receive 15 percent off a new gown)
  • Marquis & Aurbach - (702) 382-0711, 10001 Park Run Dr.,  Las Vegas, NV 89145 (one block north of Charleston on Hualapai)

Relay For Life seeks participants

Relay For Life seeks participants

The American Cancer Society is looking for participants for its Relay For Life fundraiser in April and May.

Ten relays will take place in southern Nevada during the next two months and ACS will hold a number of "Paint the Town Purple" recruiting events from April 4-7. During these events, relay committee members and team captains will be visiting area businesses encouraging community members to participate. In addition to Relay’s purple posters, volunteers will distribute purple lollipops, because "CANCER SUCKS."

Those events include: 

  • Cheeburger Cheeburger Fundraiser – Monday, April 4, 5-9 p.m., 8390 S. Rainbow Blvd.

 

  • CiCi’s Pizza Las Vegas Fundraiser – Wednesday, April 6, six locations, all day/night – 10-20 percent of sales go to ACS.

 

  • Beer Tasting Benefit - Thursday, April 7 at Freakin Frog, 7-10 p.m., 4700 S.

Helldorado Parade entries being accepted

It's not too early to plan your entry for the 2011 Helldorado Parade. The 2011 parade is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. There is no fee to enter and the City of Las Vegas will be accepting the first 120 entries now through April 25.

Thousands of people line the downtown parade route every year, and the parade is also broadcast live by Cox Communications on cable channel 96 and streamed online at http://www.cox96.net/. KCLV Channel 2 will re-broadcast the parade in the following days. A fireworks show will be launched from the Fremont Street Experience parking garage immediately after the parade.

The city's annual Hellorado Days festivities are a tribute to the anniversary of the city of Las Vegas. This year marks the city's 106th anniversary of the founding of Las Vegas. Entrants are encouraged to consider these Western roots when planning their parade applications.

4th Annual IPOF Car Show sunday March 20th

Calling all Classic car buffs! This Sunday, the Injured Police Officers' Fund will be hosting their fourth annual car show. The event will take place at Sunset Park, 2601 East Sunset Road Las Vegas, NV 89120, from 10am to 4pm on Sunday March 20th, with proceeds going to benefit the IPOF's Down Officer Fund.

"Good Games" Skate Event at Winchester Cultural Center Saturday March 19

This Saturday, the Winchester Cultural Skateboarding program presents their signature event, the "Good Games"! The Games are a skateboard contest, youth culture showcase, and an education/crime prevention/nutrition fair. The highlight of the evening is the stake Contest, which will take place on a wooden course to be build in the basketball courts, featuring several divisions for Intermediate, Advanced, Open/Sponsored Am, and Masters. The cost for entering the skate contest is $5.

Throughout the evening there will also be a number of free events, including live music, skateboard demonstrations, dancing, and information about a number of local colleges. A free raffle with prizes such as MP3 players, skateboards, and stake equipment will also be taking place throughout the evening.

The "Good Games" will take place on Saturday March 19th from 10am to 4pm at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S McLeod Drive, Las Vegas

Just a reminder, everyone- Daylight Savings Time starts up this Sunday. Everyone needs to set their clocks ahead by one hour. Make sure you get to bed early on Saturday, as you will have one less hour to sleep in on Sunday!

Special Olympics Nevada hosts a FLAG FOOTBALL CLINIC March 12

This Saturday, Special Olympics Nevada will be presenting a free flag football clinic, open to all Special Olympic Athletes and special needs individuals. The clinic is being put on with the help of Matt Petit, a local Eagle Scout Candidate, and will feature UNLV Football players as well as players from local high schools helping teach the basics of flag football. Coach Jim Fassel will be leading the clinic, which is set to conclude with a game, special needs athletes on teams with their non-disabled partners.

The clinic will run from 3pm until 5pm at Thurman White Middle School, 1661 Galleria Drive in Henderson, Nevada. for those interested in attending, please RSVP to Melva at 702-474-0690, ext 201, by this Friday, March 11th.
