Joan Kaplan, a dedicated volunteer at Nathan Adelson Hospice, received a 2011 Volunteer Spotlight Award from the Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada.

The Volunteer Spotlight Awards focus on volunteers who go above and beyond typical volunteer expectations to improve lives and build a stronger, healthier and safer community. These volunteers share talent, leadership or service skills by getting involved in their communities to help effect lasting change. Each nominee demonstrates a serious personal commitment to the mission and goals of the organization they serve.

Kaplan, who has been volunteering with Nathan Adelson Hospice for three years, originally joined the team as a pet therapist with her dogs, Asher, Trinity and Rainey.  She eventually expanded her role with the organization after helping with an emergency situation with one of the hospice’s home care patients. Aside from pet therapy and assisting patients, their families and the hospice staff, she also delivers meals to patients’ homes and provides much-needed socialization to them and their loved ones.

Kaplan also holds a bereavement class for children each month, helping them deal with death and loss. In addition, she volunteers at Camp Mariposa, the hospice’s free bereavement camp for children who have lost a loved one.

“We congratulate Joan on being recognized with this well-deserved volunteer award,” said Nathan Adelson Hospice President and CEO Carole Fisher. “She is friendly, compassionate and a wonderful listener. We appreciate all of her dedication to our patients, their loved ones and our hospice team.”
