The Palazzo Welcomes Veterans

The Palazzo Welcomes Veterans

Veterans hurt while serving overseas received a warm welcome home during a ceremony Wednesday.

The Armed Forces Foundation teamed up with The Palazzo to surprise the veterans and their families with a trip to Las Vegas. The wounded warriors came from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

“You can only imagine the kind of hardships they are going through. Not only are they coming back from a war, but they are coming back with injuries, and they adjusted,” Air Force Captain Charlie Spaulding, who was there to welcome the veterans, said.

The veterans at Wednesday’s ceremony said they also received a special welcome Tuesday night. They say the support is always appreciated.

“I love seeing the support. It helps us motivate ourselves and to succeed through our injuries,” Sergeant Greg Caron, who was injured in Afghanistan, said.

Spread the Word Nevada Receives Grant from MGM

MGM Resorts Foundation selected Spread the Word Nevada to receive a $27,000 grant.

The grant will fund the Breakfast with Books program. The program distributes books to children but it also works to spread the love of reading to the whole family. Last year, more than 21,500 books were distributed during these family literacy events. This year, the group plans each month to serve an average of 3,900 students and their families by adopting 26 elementary schools in Clark County.

"This generous grant by MGM Resorts Foundation will ensure that the low-income families in the Las Vegas Valley have an opportunity to participate in a program that will bring them  together to share quality time, while receiving  literacy tips, books, and activities to use at home as a family," stated Lisa Habighorst, Executive Director of Spread the Word Nevada.
