Step Up for Charity Event to Raise Money for Soles4Souls

Flamingo Las Vegas wants people to jump on a treadmill to raise money for people in need.

The resort along with Miller64 is hosting a Step Up for Charity event at its Southwest Corner Bar on Monday. People will be encouraged to walk, jog or run on the treadmill. As long as someone is on the treadmill the ticker will keep moving towards a contribution of $16,000 to the Nashville-based nonprofit Soles4Souls. The group donates footwear to people in need. There are similar treadmills also going in Austin, Chicago and Miami. If people at all four cities participate, as much as $64,000 could go to the charity.

There will also be an appearance by former San Antonio Spur Bruce Bowen. The Step Up for Charity will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Backpacks Filled for Kids in Need

Backpacks Filled for Kids in Need

There are a lot of conventions in Las Vegas, but only a handful actually take time off from business to help the community.

That is what people at Informatica World 2012 did Thursday. Conventioneers gathered outside the ballrooms where the convention is taking place at Aria Hotel and Casino to put together 1,000 backpacks for southern Nevada students.

The backpacks were filled with food so that kids in the Title I Hope program, which offers support and tutoring to homeless kids in the Clark County School District, can have something to eat after school.

"They are putting personal notes inside each bag so the kids will continue their efforts at being successful," Paula Zier, the coordinator for the CCSD homeless outreach program, said.

The company held a similar event in Florida.
