Chaparral Students Enjoy Free Show on the Strip

Chaparral Students Enjoy Free Show on the Strip

Students and teachers from Chaparral High School got a chance to see "Le Reve – The Dream" at the Wynn Las Vegas Tuesday.

Wynn Las Vegas and the producers of  "Le Reve" gave the students and teachers the complimentary tickets because of their dedication and perseverance throughout the school year. The group included members of the swim team. The team continued to compete despite the fact it had to forfeit every competition because it didn’t have enough members.

Theater students were also at the special showing. The students continued to put on productions even after their budget had been cut. The tickets were handed out last month during Teacher Appreciation Week. The group was able to meet the cast members before taking a group photo.

Foundation Pouring Starts Thursday for Skyvue Wheel

A planned giant observation wheel gets its physical start Thursday morning near Mandalay Bay.

The foundation begins to take shape for SkyVue, which would be the largest observation wheel in the Western Hemisphere and third largest in the world if completed. It is scheduled for a July 2013 opening.

More than 100 cement trucks will fill the foundation throughout the morning. Located across from Mandalay Bay, SkyVue would tower 500 feet above the famed Las Vegas Strip and feature 32, 24-person gondolas and offer two HD LED multimedia displays at the center of the wheel, each measuring 50,000 square feet.

The event begins at 6 a.m. at 3951 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Rare Book Store Thriving in Rare Location

Rare Book Store Thriving in Rare Location

Like so many other things, books have gone digital. That has not kept a local rare book store from surviving -- not just surviving, but thriving in a location mostly known for slot machines and table games.

Bauman Rare Books is somewhat of a time capsule. Visitors find first and second edition books that are hundreds of years old. Recent presidential biographies signed by the men they feature. What is most impressive is business is growing.

"The most common statement we get as people come in here is, that they put their arms behind their back and say, ‘I have never been in a place like this,’" Co-owner of Bauman Rare Books David Bauman said.

Bauman is a self-proclaimed book nerd. His love of reading morphed into an obsession, then a collection.

"We had lots more books than square footage," Bauman said.
