Recreational pot is legal in California on Jan. 1

California is going green! On Monday, the country's most populous state will begin recreational marijuana sales.

So, what does this mean for the local cannabis industry? One of Las Vegas valley's biggest dispensaries is welcoming the competition.

Most of Reef's customers are tourists. Reef dispensary is conveniently located less than a mile away from the Las Vegas Strip. It's no surprise most of its customers are from out of state, many of them from California.

"I lived there for a year, said Liliana Farias, a recreational pot user.

She moved back to Las Vegas recently. She says she prefers the product in the Golden State where starting Monday she can buy it legally.

But Farias doesn't believe California's recreational sales will have much of an impact on southern Nevada.

"Just because we do have a lot of tourism. So, we are getting those people that still come to Vegas for the casino, now we just have marijuana so, it just adds to the attraction," Farias said.

Mike Pizzo with Reef dispensary agrees.

"Vegas is somewhere where people come to kinda let down their hair and the whole, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas thing. It's true and that applies to cannabis as well," Pizzo said.

He says, in addition to the tourism advantage, pot taxes in Nevada are lower than they will be in California by some calculations up to 20 percent less.

"I don't think that there's any fear ... we're going to lose Nevada customers to California," Pizzo said.

On the other hand, he believes California recreational sales will have a positive impact on the cannabis industry.

"We think that's going to help pay the way for the rest of the country to eventually go legal," Pizzo said.

In total, seven states and the District of Columbia allow the sales of recreational marijuana. possessing up to an ounce of pot became legal in Nevada at the beginning of the year. Recreational sales at some medical dispensaries began in July. California is the latest state to jump on board.

"We'll see what happens out there," Farias said.

Even though recreational pot is legal in both Nevada and California, it's still illegal to take the product across state lines.
