State, county leaders launch new campaign to combat spread of COVID-19 in Hispanic community

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — An effort is now underway in Southern Nevada to combat the high number of COVID-19 cases within the Hispanic community.

On Tuesday, Clark County officials announced the launch of a new campaign that will target areas with large coronavirus numbers in Northeast and East Las Vegas.

On Tuesday, the Southern Nevada Health District reported a total of 15,095 COVID-19 cases and 416 deaths in Clark County. More than 4,800 cases are in the Hispanic population.

There has been an uptick in cases, testing and hospitalizations over the last few weeks in both Clark County and Nevada. In the last 24 hours, hospitalizations jumped up 21.

The campaign is called “Esta En Tus Manos,” or “It’s in Your Hands.” It will be a collaborative effort to educate the public and bring more testing to the areas highly impacted by coronavirus.

The campaign includes a website, estaentusmanosnevada.comto serve as an informational hub for the Hispanic community to find testing locations, health care and other resources to help people dealing with impacts from the virus.

“‘It is in Your Hands’ is an initiative to educate everyone, but in particular our Hispanic community about the alarming and devastating rates of COVID-19 here in Las Vegas that we are seeing disproportionately impacting our Latino community,” Commissioner Olivia Diaz said during the news conference.

CCSD and the Southern Nevada Health District will host testing sites on the east side of the valley on select Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout July.

No appointment is necessary and tests will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dates and locations are:

  • July 10-11, Courtney Middle School, 5301 E. Hacienda Ave., 89122;
  • July 17-18, Monaco Middle School, 1870 N. Lamont St., 89115;
  • July 24-25 Jerome Mack Middle School, 4250 E. Karen Ave., 89121;
  • July 30-Aug. 1, Roy Martin Middle School, 200 N. 28 St., 89101.
