I-Team: Police Remain Silent on Casino Counseling Case

LAS VEGAS -- It was a controversial counseling program used by casinos to root out petty crooks, make them waive rights to an attorney and pay up on the spot. But Las Vegas police continues to target U.S. Justice Associates for what court documents call "extortion."

Wednesday, Justice Associates was in court to learn more about those searches and find out what will happen next.

Metro has not charged anyone, despite two raids and months of investigation. Now the fight turned to court to learn Metro's playbook and if any casinos are now involved.

Attorney Robert Draskovich and USJA owner Steven Brox lost their argument to a judge Wednesday morning. They wanted the court to unseal documents detailing what happened during the most recent raid at a Downtown Las Vegas office and why Metro was interested.

Las Vegas Officer Shoots at, Misses Unarmed Man

LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas police say an officer responding to a call about a prowler shot at an unarmed man who startled him at the scene.

Police said Wednesday the officer was speaking to the person who called police about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when the man appeared at the wall of an abandoned residence on Cherokee Avenue near Twain and Sandhill.

Police said the officer fired one shot at the man and missed. Police say the man was briefly held until investigators determined he wasn't the subject of the original prowling report. Authorities say the man wasn't armed and was taking a shortcut. No charges were filed against him.

Police did not identify the officer who fired the shot.

Virgin Atlantic Celebrates 10 Years of Direct Flights to Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- International tourists are known to stay longer and spend more money while in Las Vegas. One way to lure them is to offer a direct flight from their home country.

Virgin Atlantic Airways started their direct flights from London to Las Vegas 10 years ago and it's been a major success. McCarran sees 148 non-stop international flights to Las Vegas every week. These direct flights have been such a success, local leaders are hoping to convince more countries to hop on board.

Tuesday, Virgin Atlantic, along with its owner Sir Richard Branson, is celebrating a milestone -- it's the 10th anniversary of non-stop flights from London to Las Vegas.

"Las Vegas is made for Virgin and Virgin is made for Las Vegas and we've had 10 great years. Ten million people have come from England here direct and it's been a lot of fun and we are still having fun," said Branson.

National Economy Improving, Nevada Still in Rough Shape

LAS VEGAS -- Local economists and business leaders debated Tuesday whether the recession has hit bottom yet.

A new report released at the UNLV Economic Outlook Conference showed some surprises, mainly corporate profits spiking to pre-recession levels and that the health services sector is booming but it's not translating into job growth.

UNLV's Center for Business and Economic Research met with Nevada business leaders and their forecast for jobs can still be summed up as "grim" for southern Nevada.

Stimulus money was a topic of conversation at the conference. Nevada only got a small percentage of stimulus money compared to other states, but experts say it helped.

In the past year, the number of construction workers at Desert Wind Homes went from 30 employees to seven. They say federal home buyer tax credits helped keep their business from going under.
